About

Adrian Thieß is a composer-performer based in Hamburg. His artistic practice focuses on extended trumpet techniques, modular synthesizers, self-developed interactive music systems based on machine learning, spatial audio, and instrument building. He studied music and theatre at the Conservatory of Lübeck and deepened his work in the field of Sound Arts and Creative Music Technology under Prof. Nicola Hein. In his improvisations, Adrian creates hybrid sonic environments that question conventional notions of authorship and embodiment, while reflecting on our evolving understanding of human-machine interaction.

Works & Projects

Hybrid Structures

Solo

Hybrid Structures is Adrian Thieß’s main solo project, where extended trumpet techniques meet modular synthesizers and self-developed interactive music systems. Rather than being a fixed composition, the project is conceived as an evolving process — a continuous exploration of the dynamic interplay between acoustic performance and interactive music technologies.

One of the most recent recorded performances of Hybrid Structures took place at the PGVIM International Symposium 2024 in Bangkok.

chaos|cadence

Ensemble

The ensemble chaos|cadence — comprising Ariadne Dalatsi (voice), Sophie Kockler (clarinet), Jorma Marggraf (piano), and Adrian Thieß (trumpet and electronics) — was formed during their shared studies at the Conservatory of Lübeck. Their work focuses on the development of interdisciplinary concert formats that merge classical and contemporary music with text, visual art, performance, and new media.

With this approach, chaos|cadence was awarded the Possehl Music Prize for New Musical Performance Concepts in January 2023 for their project A-distroy, and received the Prize for Originality at the D-bü Competition in Nuremberg in May 2024 for their project Post-Bodies {corporeal.code}.

Thiess-Dalatsi-Kim

Trio

Since 2022, Ariadne Dalatsi, Goeun Kim, and Adrian Thieß have been working together as an interdisciplinary ensemble at the intersection of experimental music, technology, and performance. Their work places improvised music at its core, aiming to expand improvisational practice through the use of interactive music systems and instrument building, constantly seeking new sonic languages.Their joint performances have included appearances at the Klangtauchen Festival in Lübeck and the next_generation X Festival at ZKM (Center for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe.

In summer 2025, the ensemble will travel to South Korea, where they have been invited to present an audiovisual installation and perform a series of concerts as part of the exhibition 관계맺기.

Modular Reverberations

for radio and modular synth

In his piece Modular Reverberations, Adrian Thieß develops a dialogue between a radio and a modular synthesizer. Starting from the diverse range of sounds that emanate from this particular radio — including spoken word fragments, snippets of music, static, and ambient noise — the composition assembles these elements into a dense, multi-layered sonic collage. By capturing and reprocessing ephemeral audio moments, Modular Reverberations draws attention to how meaning is constructed, lost, and recombined in today’s digital environments.
